Before moving to Mexico, Fr. Tom told me on many occasions that he longed to do missionary work with the poor there. When he was there I visited him and he said doing missionary work there is what he truly loved. It was in his heart to serve those very faith filled and loving people. He also told me that when he left Mexico to go to his next assignment, it was the most difficult move he had ever had to make. The people in Mexico adored him and when he returned to visit in late 2008 he was remembered and greeted by hundreds of people at Mass.
